Understand how to use Moocable Community to find study partners.
The biggest reason why most study groups fail: Lack of clarity
Most online study groups aren’t effective. I’m sure most of us have joined a study group in gusto, only to find it inactive in just a few days.
We believe this happens due to lack of clarity. That’s why, on Moocable, we ask our members to have SMART goals. <br>
S - Specific
M - Measurable
A - Achievable
R - Relevant
T- Timebound
Be specific
Rule 1: Mention the MOOC you want to study
When looking for a study partner, be specific.
Don’t say “I want to learn Python” - that’s too vague.
Instead, say “I want to study the course Python for Everybody”
Don’t say "I want to learn skill X, framework X, programming X, etc. Instead, mention the specific course/book/problem set you want to study.
This sets a clear goal for you and your peers.
Rule 2: Share the duration of study
The Lack of a proper timeline is another reason why most study groups don’t work.
Mention the duration of your study plan. You don’t need to mention how many hours/days you want to study. But, try to estimate how many weeks will the study group work for.
We’ve found that most study groups work well for 4-6 weeks. Most learners lose the motivation or discipline to study for longer durations.
Tip : Start with small study groups. Once you feel confident & have found a group of dedicated learners, then you can conduct longer study groups.
Rule 3: Share some context
When looking for study partners, you should share some context.
You can share
- Your background (education/employment/interests)
- Why do you want to study this course/book/problem set?
- How do you want to conduct the study group?
High-quality posts will result in higher engagement & help you find better study partners.
Rule 4: Kindly use our links
Moocable is 100% free and learner supported. When you buy through links on our site, we may earn an affiliate commission.
Go to our catalog, and find the course/book/problem set you are interested in.
Copy the MOOC page link, and share it in your post.
For example, if you are interested in studying the book “Automate the Boring stuff”, you can find the MOOC page here. Copy the page link and paste it in your discussion post.
If you don’t find the course/book/problem set
Incase the MOOC isn’t listed in our catalog, kindly post it here: Share a MOOC. We will add the MOOC in our catalog and notify you. In the meantime, you don’t need to use our links in the discussion post.
Rule 5: You can share the study group link in the post, comment, or via DM
You can share the study group link (Discord Server, Telegram group, Whatsapp group) either in the discussion post, in the comments, or via DM.
Examples of bad posts
Looking for Python buddies
Looking for anyone that wants to sharpen up on their Python skills together. I am a CS students who needs help with working on projects and such and I’m looking for anyone who is learning python that may be interested in studying together.
Why was this bad:
- Lack of clarity. The learner did not mention what course/book/problem set they wanted to study. They set a vague goal to “sharpen their Python skills”.
Python discord all levels welcome
Hi guys here’s my discord if you want to join. We are doing a group project today for beginners if you’d like to join. We haven’t figured anything out as of yet but we are looking for something to work with dictionaries, lists, functions and classes.
Why was this bad:
- Not a goal-based study group. The learner should have picked a specific course/book/problem set to study.
- No fixed timeline.
Examples of good posts

MOOC Link
Looking for someone to do DSA with, we will follow the the Striver A2Z DSA playlist for 6 weeks. I plan to do 2 questions daily. I plan to do questions in a mix of Java and C++. Let me know if you are interested, we can even do voice calls on discord to discuss approaches. I am in third year of college.
Why was this good:
- Goal-based post. The learner specifically mentioned the course/book/problem set they wanted to study.
- Timeline. The learner expliclity mentioned that they intend to study for 6 weeks.
- Context provided. The learner provided extra details. Such as: solve 2 problems daily, they are in 3rd year of college, and are willing to discuss the material via Discord voice calls.
